EQUITY
Rooted in history we reckon with the past and strive to uphold dignity, fairness, and respect in our relationships with everyone.

Common Defense Education Fund exists to empower veterans and the broader military community to transform our society through veteran training programs, community education, advocacy campaigns, and more.
We envision a world free of structural violence where everyday people are civically engaged in the decisions that impact their lives.
We see a grassroots movement of veteran leaders united at the forefront of struggles to foster an inclusive democracy where liberty and justice truly exist for all.

Common Defense Education Fund was founded in 2016 and has been leading the fight against authoritarianism since.

We are a veteran-led grassroots movement dedicated to protecting democracy, combating authoritarianism, and building a future where liberty and justice truly are for all. We represent the diversity of the military and are united by the oath that we swore to defend the Constitution—from enemies, foreign and domestic. Together, we’re proving that patriotism means service to people—not politicians.
The communities we serve face systemic challenges, including inadequate healthcare access, underemployment, voter suppression and targeted disinformation. However, too often, veterans are used as political props rather than active participants in shaping the policies affecting them. We believe that civic participation and political empowerment are the antidotes to these barriers, and our work centers veterans as rightful leaders in their communities, taking meaningful political action—from local organizing to national advocacy.
By providing structured training, mentorship, and real-time campaign engagement, our programming helps veterans utilize their unique voice and persuasiveness as America’s most trusted messengers to become effective advocates on issues that matter most to them. The majority of our organizing staff started out as volunteers, demonstrating the strength of our bottom-up model. Through State Organizing Committees (SOCs), intensive leadership training programs at the state level, our members hone their organizing skills, develop their unique voices, and build community with other veterans who have shared lived experiences and values. Our Veterans for Democracy campaign mobilizes veterans to foster civic participation and hold power accountable, while our Veterans Power America campaign puts veterans at the forefront of the clean and renewable energy movement. Our member-led affinity caucuses center the voices and leadership of historically marginalized veterans and inform our broader advocacy work.
Since our inception, progressive movement-building and equitable organizing have been central to our theory of change. While we have a national presence, we focus our grassroots power building on Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Texas. Our organizing model is grounded in a multi-racial, multi-generational, intersectional, LGBTQIA+-inclusive, working class movement. Our membership embodies the inclusive democracy we seek to build.
Rooted in history we reckon with the past and strive to uphold dignity, fairness, and respect in our relationships with everyone.
Fueled by love and unwavering optimism in the face of oppression and violence we are committed to building a better future.
We believe accountability is core to achieving peace and prioritize being in solidarity with directly impacted communities.
Knowing our shared interests we choose to gather our collective strength and counter the cynicism of corruption and patronage.
Veterans and their families from every walk of life and every era of service have found a political home here at Common Defense. Here’s just a few of those stories.
